In Carson City, the sound of summer has a name. Jazz!

The "Jazz! Carson City Music Festival" was started in 2004 as a project by the local Mile High Jazz Band and grew within a few years into the city's major summer event, the one no one can image to be without anymore.

In 2010, more than 100 musicians in over 20 bands presented 40 scheduled performances between August 8 and August 28, at multiple venues - most outdoors - throughout town. The main events took place between August 20 and 22, with a few trailers after that and lead-in performances starting on August 8.

Bands from as small as a duo to as large as 18-member big bands played to fans of every taste from traditional jazz and blues to the avant-garde modern and freestyle variations.

Freestyle, electronic and progressive-modern tunes were served by the Lois Laurain Quartet, Fiscus, the Tristan Selzler's Blues Assault and the Warren Walker Group. Combos like the Jazz Guys, The Garfin Gathering, the Millennium Bugs, the Pat Esters Combo, Linda Merrell & Blue Jasmine, the Johnny Hamlin Trio and Lucky Diamond & The Gents o' Jive played traditional Jazz and swing from the '20s to the '50s and beyond.

Performances by Barbara Baxter and Sample of Soul were influenced by soul, motown and R&B. Folk and country rock were presented by

Ten Dollar Pony, while the high-energy harmonica and horns band Delta Wires delivered straight blues, and lovers of bluegrass and ragtime tunes got their fix from Large Bills Accepted.

Of course, it would not be a jazz festival without the riveting big band sound that was given by the Tahoe Dance Band, the Carson High Jazz Band, the Reno Jazz Orchestra with singer Cami Thompson and - you guessed it - the Mile High Jazz Band, featuring five outstanding vocalists, Sheryl Adams, Jakki Ford, June Joplin, Mark Williams and Lainey Henderson.

August in Carson City has always been a month of great weather. Since 2004 it is also a month of great music, jazz. The sound of summer.
